Our 100th Memorial Tree

We're celebrating our 100th Memorial Tree in remembrance of Paula Brabham. A tree and bench have been installed in City Park in her honor.

It's located on the Park Street side of City Park. If you would like a Memorial Tree for someone who was special to you, contact us.

History

Parkersburg City Council established the City of Parkersburg Tree Commission, by ordinance dated 8-11-98.

The first committee was comprised of:

Wayne Waldeck - Chairman, who served until 9-1-07
Willis Ridenour - Vice-Chairman
Charles Casto
Cammy-Murray Pugh (Council Representative)
Richard Williams (Public Works Director)

The first meeting was held October 6, 1998.

In 1998, 28 trees were planted by the City. Approximately 1,000 have been planted so far!

First Arbor Day for the City was held on November 10, 1998.

First designated as a Tree City USA was April 21, 1999 and have maintained that status each year following.

Received The Gold Leaf Award on October 26, 1999 by the International Society of Arboriculture.

City of Parkersburg was a "Pilot City" for the Municipal Tree Replacement Program, which was established by Allegheny Power.

Established the Tree Memorial Program.

Worked with the Parkersburg-Wood County Library to establish the John Blomberg Arboretum located at the site of the library on Emerson Avenue.

Offer a $500.00 grant to any city wide neighborhood group that can raise at least $1,000.00 on their own for planting of trees. (Washington Avenue Historical District was first recipient)

City tree inventoried on TreeKeeper and accessible thru the City of Parkersburg website.
